Trocaire thanks people of Tyrone for Haiti appeal response

TROCAIRE has thanked the people of Co. Tyrone for responding so generously to its appeal to help Haiti, six months after a massive earthquake destroyed the Caribbean country.

Through a combination of church collections and money given directly to Trocaire 134,733 was raised in the county for the organisation’s emergency work in Haiti.

Dungannon woman Sally O'Neill, Trocaire’s Latin America Manager, thanked Tyrone as she stood in a camp where 80,000 distraught people have received food, water and medical care from the organisation.

“January 12th 2010 is a day Haiti will never forget; 250,000 people lost their lives in a few seconds, more than in the Asian tsunami,” she said.

“Tyrone people have made a huge contribution to our emergency aid work in Haiti. Your kindness and quick response meant we could immediately supply tents, food, hygiene kits and urgent medical care to shocked, grieving and injured people. This undoubtedly saved lives.”

Since January Trocaire, as part of Caritas International, the second biggest aid network in the world and part of the Catholic Church, has provided: shelter kits and tents to 900,000 people,
