Truck convoy raises cash for motorcyclists

The fundraising event saw over 50 trucks, vans and motorbikes set off in convoy on a 30-mile road run around the area helping those who have been injured as a result of a motorbike accident.

Over £900 was raised for the worthy cause on the day and cash is still coming in, according to main organiser and HGV driver Roy Bartlem.

He said: “We thought it would be a good idea to arrange a truck run to help out some of the riders who have been injured as a result of motorbike accidents.

“It took a bit of arranging but we are very happy with the support received.

“Truck drivers are a generous bunch and I am very grateful to all those who turned up on Saturday for the run.

“The weather was great and everyone really enjoyed themselves. In the end we raised £900 for the charity and donations are still coming in.”

Truck drivers came from Ballymena, Newry and beyond to join the convoy which set off around 2pm.

Barry McParland drove up from Newry to help the cause. He said: “Even though we are very busy it is nice to take time out and help charities.

“It’s a great way to spend a Saturday among fellow truck drivers and raising money for a good cause.”

Ted Jones had spent hours getting his 2013 Volvo FH4 cleaned up for the big event.

Ted normally spends his days delivering animal feed for Hutchinson Feeds in Cookstown but was happy to be part of the charity run.

“It’s always nice to get out on a run especially in such fine weather,” he said.

“The truck is looking well but will be back at work delivering feed to farms on Monday morning.”

Jan Simm, one of the founders of the Injured Riders Welfare Fund in 2003, was pleased with all who turned up.

“It’s really heart-warming to see so many people give up their time to raise money for those riders who are injured.

“The truckers, van drivers and motorcyclists who attended on Saturday are a credit to the driving fraternity.

“The money will help some of our riders who got injured in accidents and they will appreciate the efforts everyone has gone to.”
