Trust helps Carers to care for themselves

UNPAID carers from Strabane, Limavady and Londonderry were given the opportunity to take time out for themselves at a special event in the Broomhill Hotel last week.

More than 80 carers from the Western Trust area attended the "Valuing Carers - Carers' Support Day" which was an opportunity for those looking after someone to take a break from their caring responsibilities and relax with others involved in the same role.

The event marked the start of Carers Week, which ran from 14 June to 20 June, with the theme "A life of my own." Carers had a chance to sample a variety of complementary therapies and health checks.

Mr John McGarvey, Assistant Director of Intermediate Care and Rehabilitation, Western Trust said: "The response from Carers this year has been phenomenal.

"The event offers Carers the opportunity to take a break away from their caring role and relax with other people with similar experiences."

Mr McGarvey added: "It is important to know that those attending the event are registered as Carers with the Western Trust and the Trust is keen to see and encourage more people involved in an unpaid caring role registering."

Mr Paul McCormack, Development Manager in Northern Ireland for The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, spoke at the event and said: "The Princess Royal Trust for Carers wants to see real change in the lives of Carers and is campaigning for greater recognition and support. Above all we want all Carers to know that they are not alone and that help and services are available from all providers working in partnership."

The keynote speaker on the day was Dr Maria Key, MB MRCPysch.

Maria gave an inspirational presentation to the Carers saying: "It is very humbling to speak to a group of Carers and a great privilege. All of us take so much for granted.

"Knowing how much Carers give of themselves and how difficult it can be for them, it never ceases to amaze me how positive most Carers are despite their circumstance.

"We all need to make more time for Carers and those involved in providing and commissioning healthcare should recognise this as a need and a key priority when they are considering future investment."
