A notice of motion proposing conferment of the top civic honour is to be put to Monday night’s July monthly meeting of Mid & East Antrim Borough Council by TUV Bannside Alderman Stewart McDonald.

In a statement issued ahead of the meeting, Alderman McDonald, said: “It is with great pride that we witnessed a truly historic and momentous event - Northern Ireland at the European Championships. That in itself was cause for celebration. The cherry on the cake was the dedication, pride and team spirit that got our wee country into the knock out stages of this elite tournament.

“It is my honour to propose to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council that we confer the freedom of the Borough to Michael O’Neill and the Northern Ireland football team in recognition of their achievements. I hope others will join us in supporting the motion.”

Echoing his comments, fellow TUV Cllr Timothy Gaston said: “Michael O’Neill and the entire team did this country proud. I travelled to France to watch the team and we have certainly left our mark on European football.

“This motion shows our appreciation to what this team has achieved.”
