'Twenty is plenty' for roads round Lisburn

THE VICE chair of Lisburn SDLP, Aisling Twomey, has said her party is ready to front a new drive against speeding motorists by seeking a reduction in the speed limit for residential areas of the city.

Ms Twomey said the campaign will call for the present 30 mph limit to go to 20 mph in built up districts.

The '20 is plenty' safety scheme has already been launched by her SDLP colleague, MLA Conall McDevitt, in South Belfast and Ms Twoney want Lisburn to follow.

She said: "Our slogan will be that 'Twenty is Plenty for Lisburn'. We want our city to be implementing the toughest possible laws to put the brakes on motoring law breakers in quiet residential areas.

"We need to develop an attitude to speed which is based on a zero tolerance when it comes to breaking the law. There can be no excuses when it comes to putting lives at risk.

"The Police Service needs to adopt a much tougher pro-active stance on the subject," she continued. "To be fair to the PSNI it has reacted positively to the issue we raised of boy-racers taking over at night the main streets of Lisburn. However, the same hard-line approach is equally important in residential areas."

Ms Twomey said all the available research has concluded that various traffic calming measures only had an impact in the short term.

She said there needed to be a combined approach of preventative restrictions on speed along with a strategy of continuing education for motorists.

"Residents living in Lisburn and in the likes of Lambeg and Hilden have raised concerns about their streets being used as a life sized Scalextric track.

"They have had enough of being abused by motorists who believe that they are above the law," Ms Twomey added.
