Twenty-two tooktheir own lives

There were 22 deaths registered due to suicide in the Londonderry area in 2013, the latest year for which figures are available.

The Finance Minister Simon Hamilton provided the details in response to an Assembly Question from Foyle MLA Gary Middleton.

The Minister said some of the deaths may have occurred earlier but were registered in 2013.

“Consequently, some suicide deaths that occurred in 2013 may not have been registered in 2013. Equally, some that were registered in 2013 may have occurred earlier,” he said.

The Londonderry MLA has previously raised the issue of suicide on these pages and at the Stormont Assembly.

He does so again on in today’s paper on Page 6.
