Twin village match raises vital funds for Clic Sargent

A challenge match between the young bloods and the golden oldies of the Kells and Connor footballing fraternity has helped raised more than £1700 for Clic Sargent, the children’s cancer charity.

In the end, the youngsters (u-25s) made their youth tell by defeating the oldies (over 25s) by 4-1 in the big game.

Mervyn Crawford, who organised the event with assistance from Jason Trainor, explained that local footballers had been touched by recent instances of cancer affecting families in the twin villages and decided to raise funds for the clic sargent charity.

“I have to say the response from the local football lads was tremendous,” he said. “We had a great game followed by a barbecue, raffle and night of entertainment in the Buffs Club. At the end of the evening we had raised £1712.”

Mervyn, speaking on behalf of all the footballers, thanked local MLA Robin Swann for arranging a meal for two at Stormont as a raffle prize; he also thanked the Ross Park Hotel for their generous prize of a meal for two in the top class hotel.

“We would also like to thank Sizzlers Chip Shop, R. J’s Chip Shop, Supervalu and Ernest Thompson for their great support. And a special thank you goes to Pamela and Sarah for their cooking skills at the barbecue! We would also thank Matthew Warwick who DJ’d and the Buffs Club for allowing use of their premises.”
