Two arrested after foiled robbery

It took officers just two minutes to arrive at the scene of the attempted robbery at Parkgate on the Avenue Road. Upon arrival they were involved in a struggle with the two masked robbers, who were armed with batons and an imitation firearm.

Police received a report of the robbery at 10.32pm and officers on an anti-burglary patrol attended within two minutes.

Three police officers sustained injuries during the incident however no members of the public were harmed.

A 29-year-old man and 36-year-old man were arrested and are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Chief Inspector Anthony McNally, Craigavon Area Commander, said: “We listened to concerns from the local community about burglary and provided a more visible presence and anti-burglary patrols, enabling us to respond to this incident within minutes.

“This is just one excellent example of local officers providing the personal service the community has asked for.

“The officers involved are to be commended for their swift and brave actions which has resulted in the arrest of two males. I would also like to thank the community for their support which assists us in responding to and tackling crimes of this nature.”

Detectives are also appealing for information following the attempted robbery at McDonald’s in Edward Street on Saturday morning.

It was reported that at around 5.50am a man armed with a knife entered the fast food restaurant, which is open 24 hours, and demanded money from staff.

The demands were refused and the man made off empty handed in the direction of the Shankill Estate. He was described as being approximately 20-years-old, six foot tall and of slim build. He was wearing a dark coloured hooded top and dark tracksuit bottoms and had his face covered with white material. There were no reports of any injuries.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “The safety and wellbeing of our staff is our priority and we are offering support to any colleagues who may have been affected by the incident. The matter is currently being investigated by the police.”
