Two bodies recovered from burnt out car near Lisburn

It’s believed the pair were a married couple in their 50s from the local area.

The emergency services were alerted on Sunday night after a neighbour heard an explosion in a field where a vehicle was in flames.

Police said they were not treating the deaths as suspicious. Post-mortem examinations are to be carried out and a coroner’s inquest will be held later.

An exclusion zone had been set up around the car because there was a gas cylinder in the vehicle.

The police said their investigation is at a very early stage, however at this time a crime is not suspected.

Investigating officers are keen to trace the movements of the couple and their red Ford Focus car in the time leading up to the report of the vehicle on fire.

It’s believed the couple left their home in the Carnbane Road area at around 6.30pm and police would ask anyone with knowledge of their movements between 6.30pm and 9.45pm to contact them. The number to call is 0845 600 8000.
