Two local schools are best

TEACHERS and pupils at two local schools are celebrating after winning prestigious environmental awards.

Dunseverick Primary School has been named the North Eastern Education and Library Board’s Best Kept Primary school in the 2010 SuperValu Best Kept School Awards, while Ballymoney Nursery School was runner up in the Pre Primary School category.

The Best Kept Awards are organised annually by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC) and sponsored by independent retail group SuperValu. NIAC announced the province’s Best Kept Schools at a recent event.

Almost two hundred schools from across Northern Ireland entered the awards this year and NIAC judges have been travelling the country since March to find the tidiest and most environmentally active schools.

NIAC President Doreen Muskett MBE commented; “The SuperValu Best Kept Awards exist to encourage the interest of young people in their school grounds and the environment as a whole. Every year we see great examples of the work being done by hundreds of schools across Northern Ireland and we reward the most environmentally aware and active ones.

“When judging the award entries we look for evidence of pupil participation in environmental projects, and of course clean and tidy school grounds. Dunseverick Primary School and Ballymoney Nursery School are real examples of excellence in all of these areas.”

Dunseverick Primary has been awarded a monetary prize to help them with their environmental endeavours and all category winners receive a personalized sign and a perpetual crystal trophy. Runners up are recognised with a special certificate and a monetary donation. The prize fund for winning schools is 300 per school, with runners up getting 120. The overall winning school receives an additional 200.
