At Belfast Magistrates’ Court, David Lee Stewart, 30, faced charges of causing the student’s death by dangerous driving and causing his death by careless driving while unfit.

Stewart, of Grays Park Avenue in the city, is further accused of failing to stop and failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing injury.

His co-defendant William Ross Casement, 20, from Belvoir Drive in Belfast, is charged with assisting an offender and aiding and abetting in failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Casement is also accused of a separate indecent behaviour incident in the vicinity of Donegall Square East on the same date.

Both men were released on continuing bail to return to court next month.

Mr Dolan’s death occurred just weeks after a crash barrier was removed from the scene of the collision.

New safety measures were later installed by the Department for Regional Development.
