Two mobiles stolen from city police stations

AFTER the retrieval of a PSNI officer’s lost mobile phone by dissident republicans in Belfast sparked concerns of a security breach, the Sentinel can reveal that at least two phones have been stolen from police stations in Londonderry in the last five years.

Two mobile phones - one of which was valued at £70 - were stolen from Strand Road police station in 2008, according to information released by the PSNI under Freedom of Information legislation.

The PSNI advised that in the instance of a £70 mobile phone stolen from Strand Road on October 18 it was not possible to identify who owned it and that it may not have directly belonged to the PSNI and may have been in police possession as a result of property handed in, seizures or recoveries.

Earlier this month concern was sparked when it emerged republican splinter group Óglaigh na hÉireann had obtained the lost mobile phone of a Belfast-based police officer containing photographs of the officer and her colleagues.
