Two pensioners’ handbags stolen by heartless thieves

TWO pensioners had their handbags stolen this week in distraction type burglaries.

The most recent incident occurred at Rathvarna Drive on Wednesday when a woman had her handbag stolen after a man claiming to be from the Housing Executive got into her house. The incident occurred at approximately 10.40am.

The man then made off with the lady’s handbag. It was reported that he was driving a white car.

It followed another incident on Tuesday when shortly after 3pm an elderly woman had her handbag stolen when she let a man into her home at Station Road, Lambeg. He had approached the elderly woman claiming to be fixing the gutters at a house next door.

The man got into the house after the lady agreed to have her guttering looked at but then made off with a sum of money and a handbag. The handbag was recovered a short distance from the scene.

Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in either area around the time of these incidents or has any information is asked to contact police at Lisburn on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police are again urging people, especially the elderly, not to let people into their homes without ID. And they are asking family members to reinforce this advice to their elderly relations.

* Think before you open the door - use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise the caller.

* Always ask callers for proof of identity. Genuine callers will carry a photographic identification card. Ask to see their identification and check this closely to make sure that it is valid. If you are unsure, telephone Quick Check. Dial 0800 013 22 90 and the person on the other end will check the caller at your door is legitimate. The service is free and operates 24 hours a day. Genuine callers will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say they are. * Alternatively, if you are not convinced of the identity of the caller, don’t let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return.

* Finally, be aware. You know who lives on your street so if you see someone acting suspiciously note down any important details such as a description or car registration and contact police. We will follow up on your call and there is every possibility your information could prevent a crime.
