The alerts are ongoing at two separate locations off the Limavady road. One is ongoing at the Trafalgar Court area, while another is ongoing at the Jeffrey Avenue area.

At around 11 am this morning (February 19), the PSNI announced that a security alert was ongoing in the Trafalgar Court area. Inspector Sam Shearer said: “A suspicious object has been located in the front garden of a property.”

A police spokesperson later gave the following update: “There is a diversion on Limavady Road at the entrance to Broomhill Avenue. Nelson Drive and Broomhill Avenue are closed but traffic is moving on the Limavady Road. Trafalgar Court and Nelson Drive are being evacuated but it would appear only a handful of residents are at home at present. Sperrin Park community centre has been opened for anyone that wishes to make use of it. ATO has been tasked.”

A further update was issued by the PSNI just before 1pm, declaring: “There’s a security alert in Jeffrey Avenue in Derry. A suspicious object has been located and ATO has been tasked to examine it. Members of the public should avoid the area of Jeffrey Avenue and Harkness Gardens at present.”

This follows the disruption caused earlier this week by a security alert elsewhere in the Waterside. An alert in the Currynierin area forced residents from their homes and road closures as the PSNI worked to ensure the safety of the local community.
