The pair, aged 21 and 19 - both from the Co Tyrone village of Donemana - were killed instantly when a car in which they were backseat passengers crashed as it was being driven along the Strabane to Derry road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The PSNI confirmed yesterday that an 18-year-old man, a relation of the two men who were killed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving - he has since been released.

The black coloured Volkswagen Golf is understood to have veered off the road between the villages of Magheramason and Newbuildings on the outskirts of Derry shortly after 3am.

An 18-year-old male and a 15-year-old girl, who was a front seat passenger in the vehicle, were treated in Altnagelvin Hospital for injuries they sustained in the fatal crash.

PSNI Chief Supt. Alan Hutton said four people have now lost their lives on roads in the Foyle district so far this year.

He added: “This is an awful tragedy in which only one car was involved.

“There is nothing more tragic in life than the loss of a young life. This is the emotion that parents are fearing most, the knock on door with this message.”
