Tyrone farmer convicted of causing suffering to animal

A farmer and a haulier have been sentenced to community service on charges connected to transporting an animal when it was unfit for the journey.

Farmer Joseph Donaghey (26), Fintona Road, Clogher, Co Tyrone, was sentenced at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on one charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and one charge of transporting a bovine animal that was not fit for the journey.

He had previously pleaded guilty and received 150 hours community service.

An animal belonging to him was presented at an abattoir and, in the opinion of the DARD Veterinary Officer, the animal should have been euthanased on farm and not transported with other cattle which caused further suffering.

Patrick McKenna (67), Derryclooney Road, Augher, Co Tyrone, was convicted at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on 20 April 2016 of one charge of transporting a bovine animal that was not fit for the journey.

He had transported an unfit animal to an abattoir on behalf of Joseph Donaghey. He had previously pleaded guilty and received 100 hours community service.
