Tyrone man caught driving at 104mph on notorious stretch of road

A Ballygawley man caught doing 104mph has been disqualified from driving for two months.

“There should be only one outcome for this kind of behaviour on the road,” District Judge John Meehan told the court.

“Someone driving at 104mph ... is making a calculation that he won’t get caught. It cannot be tolerated.

“That section of the road is notorious ... this was reckless behaviour.”

The court heard how the defendant, Robert Erskine, 23, from Crew Road, was detected on Annaghilla Road on the night of February 27.

He initially told police that he was at his cousin’s birthday and was heading to his best friend’s house.

Mr Blaine Nugent, defending, said his client, a worker at Westland Horticulture, had been travelling at an “obscene” speed.

As well as the driving ban, Judge Meehan handed down a fine of £300 and an offender’s levy of £15. Bail for appeal was set at £200.
