Tyrone motorist banned after erratic driving on M1 motorway

A Coalisland man caught without car insurance for the fourth time has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Appearing before East Tyrone Magistrate’s Court to be sentenced on Wednesday past was Grigorius Sviridovas, 40, from Clonabay.

He was spotted by police on the M1 performing “erratic manoeuvres” while accelerating to 90mph at 5.30pm on August 24.

He was pursued and stopped by the officers where it was discovered that he had neither MOT nor insurance.

Mr Patrick Taggart, defending, told the court that his client had been in Northern Ireland for ten years and had worked during that time.

He said that his client had contested the speeding offence before accepting the charge.

He said that his client claimed to have purchased the car on the day of the offence.

“This is his fourth conviction for no insurance. The court’s hands are tied as he is not suitable for community service,” said Deputy District Judge Anne Marshall as she handed down a one month prison sentence before banning him from the road for eighteen months.

A fine of £25 was also imposed by Judge Marshall.
