On accepting the position, Mr Mackin said: “it is a great honour to be appointed President of The Belfast Battalion particularly as The Brigade celebrates 125 years since its formation in Ireland in Charlotte Street Mission hall connected to St Mary Magdalene Parish Church on the Donegall Pass, Belfast in 1888 with the formation of the 1st Irish B.B. Company.

“Over those 125 years numerous dedicated leaders have met significant challenges but irrespective of the difficulties a balanced programme of activities that is relevant to our Boys has been maintained. Today the challenge is no less and, in moving forward, we must always consider how we can best be relevant in a changing society”.

He is the first member from the Lisburn and District Group of BB Companies to be appointed as President of the Belfast Battalion.
