American democracy’s Ramelton roots

THE first ever plaque erected by the Ulster History Circle in Donegal will honour Francis Makemie, renowned as “the father of American Presbyterianism,” on Friday (June 21).

Born in Ramelton, he was ordained a minister in 1682 by the Presbytery of Laggan, and when called to America, he left Ireland and took his lifelong battle for religious freedom to the New World.
