Arrest related to election count attack

A REPUBLICAN arrested on Wednesday (September 25) in relation to dissident attempts to disrupt the general election in Londonderry in 2010 has been released.

The 45-year-old man - arrested in County Antrim - was released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

In May 2010 a bomb alert and controlled explosion disrupted the count at the Templemore Sports Complex. Óglaigh na hÉireann claimed it forced a taxi-driver to take a a pipe-bomb to the venue and that it had left another device inside the venue.

In a statement the dissident republican group said the two devices were left on the day of the count and that a warning had been given. At the time the PSNI said it has searched the complex after a coded warning about a bomb.

But they said the original warning was misleading and one device - hidden in the ceiling of toilets in the complex - did not contain a detonator and could not have exploded. The attempted disruption prompted the Chief Electoral Officer to move the main count centre to Lisneal College for the 2011 local and regional elections. A Sentinel staff member’s car was damaged in the controlled explosion.
