Dr Anne Kilgallen the Western Trust’s Medical Director said “the development of Altnagelvin as a major teaching hospital at undergraduate and postgraduate levels had been a strategic goal of the Trust.”

But addressing a meeting of the Western Trust Board she advised that “the current facility on the Altnagelvin site had reached saturation with current facilities being used to full capacity.”

She explained the current building is due to be relocated in 2016 to enable the building of the North Wing as part of the hospital’s strategic development project.

Seven options were considered for future medical education provision and four were eventually shortlisted.

Of these an option to relocate and reconfigure a vacant modular building on site at Altnagelvin was the first ranked option.

Alan Moore, the Trust’s Director of Strategic Capital Development supported the reconfiguration saying the strategic redevelopment of the tower block had given the opportunity to have a dedicated medical education facility on the Altnagelvin site.
