Paul Hughes, an independent candidate in the forthcoming Local Government elections in the new Faughan ward, said: “No further industrial plans for the Strathfoyle/Maydown area should be allowed to progress until the ‘Health Impact Assessment’ has been fully completed and results publicly published.”

He said: “The detailed study will include an appraisal of existing industrial activity in what is a heavily industrialised area and is long over due.

“I am pleased that this study will not only examine the 18 existing industries but also the five new proposed industries which includes the Gasification Plant which is considered a type of incinerator under EU Legislation, which over 10,500 citizens of Derry have now signed a petition against.”
