Consultation on revised NW waste plan to open

THE Londonderry public will from Wednesday (October 2) have the opportunity to have its say on a revised waste management plan for the city and six sister councils.

RPS Consulting recently completed a review of the North West Waste Management Plan 2006 - 2020.

The North West Waste Region Waste Management Group (NWRWMG) - a voluntary coalition of seven councils stretching from Strabane to Moyle, is responsible for the plan.

Derry City Council’s Environmental Services Committee are set to discuss the plan on Thursday (October 3).

According to a report that will be laid before the Committee: “The NWRWMG’s Waste Management Plan has been prepared to provide the required infrastructure to facilitate the development and implementation of sustainable waste management practices.

“The primary purpose of this Plan is to set out the arrangements for the management of the wastes arising within the NWRWMG, in fulfilment of each member Councils’ statutory obligations under the EU Waste Framework Directive, and The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.”

The plan has to be reviewed periodically to ensure it can deliver on key objectives - including the reduction of landfilling - on order to avoid huge European fines.

A consultation is due to open on Wednesday (October 2) with members of the public having eight weeks to have their say.

The revised plan will then be submitted to the Department of the Environment (DoE) by the end of the current year.
