Cops lament ‘excessive’ youth death rate

EMERGENCY services have re-enacted a horrific road crash in Londonderry with top road police from both sides of the border lamenting the ‘excessively high’ rate (between 26 per cent and 30 per cent) of young people dying on our roads.

The Londonderry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) hosted the schools engagement event at Templemore Sports Complex.

PSNI Roads Policing Inspector Stephen Haslett said: “This scenario will be hard hitting and will drive the message of road safety home to our young drivers.

“Of the 760 people killed or seriously injured on our roads between January and October last year 201 or 26.4 per cent were aged between 16 and 24.

“The figure is excessively high for this age group and this is why we are targeting year 13 and 14 pupils from our schools on both sides of the border.

Inspector Michael Harrison from An Garda concurred: “The statistics for the Republic of Ireland show a similar picture to those in the North with 30 per cent of our road fatalities in 2010 aged under 24.

“This partnership approach will hopefully prove effective and get the safe driving message across to our most vulnerable age group.”
