Council warns over potential gas cooker killers

DERRY City Council has issued an urgent appeal over potentially dangerous gas cookers, which, can in certain circumstances produce lethal levels of carbon monoxide.

Certain models of BEKO Leisure and Flavel cookers with a separate oven and grill can, if they are not operated in accordance with the user instructions, produce dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide which poses a serious risk to your health or death.

Derry City Council’s Environmental Health department is urging all consumers with gas cookers, including landlords and letting agents to check if their cooker is one of the makes and models affected.

If so, they should contact the manufacturer helpline number to arrange for it to be modified free of charge. Under no circumstances should anyone operate the grill with the grill door closed – it must always be in the open position. It is also essential that people do not use the cookers as heaters or for any other purpose than cooking.
