His talk at 7.30pm in the Unison Building, 1 Clarendon Street, will be based on his latest book, ‘Cuba Under Siege: American Policy, the Revolution and Its People.’

Mr Bolender is a guest scholar with the Washington-based Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA), a nonprofit, tax-exempt independent research and information organisation established to promote the common interests of the hemisphere.

In his new book, he explores how Cuban society has been affected by what he calls 50 years of “non stop hostility from the world’s most powerful nation.”

He offers extensive historical analysis, firsthand interviews and expert comment.

Most significantly he puts the blockade of Cuba into the historical military context of the tactic of siege and analyses the psychological impacts of this on the besieged population, with some remarkable insights from historical parallels.
