The outgoing chair of the Londonderry policing watchdog Thomas Conway welcomed the development.

He said: “I am delighted that our twelve Community Safety Wardens are now fully trained and competent in the use of these life saving devices.

“Our warden teams work a lot of night shifts and are in constant contact with the public. All wardens were already fully first aid accredited and we felt that the next step was to provide them with this specialised defibrillator training.

“The Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) secured funding from the Department of Justice under the Criminal Confiscation Receipts Fund to purchase three defibrillator kits which are now held in wardens’ vehicles.”

He said he hoped the wardens never have to use the kits but noted that it was reassuring that along with Council’s Leisure and Airport staff, the Community Safety Wardens are now in a position to provide an initial response to cardiac emergencies.
