Family of Real IRA member and victim compensated

THE family of Real IRA member, Kieran Doherty, who was murdered by the dissident republican group in 2010 - has received compensation.

The 31-year-old was murdered in late February 2010. The Real IRA claimed responsibility.Now it’s emerged Mr Doherty’s mother and grandmother have received an undisclosed sum from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel.

Shortly before his murder Mr Doherty went public over an alleged approach by MI5 concerning an apparent cigarette manufacturing firm.

Not long after the murder Foyle MP Mark Durkan said Mr Doherty’s partner had told him she had a penned a letter to the Government complaining of security service harassment.

Deputy First Minister described his killers as ‘a gang’ and called on the group to disband.

His murder was also discussed by intelligence analysts at the US intelligence firm Stratfor who referred to the alleged approach by MI5.
