Film-maker wants to talk to local people with suicide experience

A LOCAL film company wants to speak to people from Londonderry who have been bereaved by suicide and also those who have made a full recovery after a period of feeling suicidal.

Meaningful films from Belfast are currently producing a special suicide prevention video aimed at supporting young people and their families in Londonderry.

The producers hope the programme will make people aware of the treatments and services available for those suffering

from depression.

Producer Noeleen Leddy says: “The film will offer hope by hearing from people who overcame a period of feeling suicidal.

“We will also look at what young people can do if they are concerned for the welfare of a friend.

“Some research has found that youngsters in distress will first talk to their friends. We hope this film will equip teens with the skills to cope in such a challenging situation.

The Sentinel recently reported how the suicide rate in Londonderry was 38 per cent higher than in the Western area generally.

Data from the city also led experts to declare a ‘crisis’ in young male suicide and demand additional professional provision for those contemplating taking their own lives

The Sentinel also reported how emergency paramedics were rushed to 1,018 cases of people trying to kill themselves, overdosing on drink or drugs or engaging in such abnormal psychiatric behaviour that 999 had to be called in Londonderry in 2011.

Meaningful films say they are particularly interested in speaking to individuals who overcame suicidal feelings and made a full recovery after suffering a traumatic experience during the troubles.

This film, is one of a series of publicly funded initiatives to try and tackle the suicide problem in Northern Ireland which has risen by by 100 per cent in the past 15 years
