German dissidentrepublican dies

A Darmstadt anti-fascist - who supplied anti-loyalist stickers that appeared in Londonderry last summer - has died, the Sentinel has learned.

René Heidisch ran the Irish Rebel Store and Rot Front (Red Front) shop in Darmstadt.

He described himself in December 2012 as a representative of Irish Republican Solidarity, Inter 64 and the 32 County Sovereignty Movement.

In a statement, Republican Sinn Féin said: “Irish republicans mourn the death of René Heidisch. René passed away at night time on Monday, April 14.

“René who lived in Darmstadt, Germany, was an active member of the Anti-fascist Movement in Germany and a staunch supporter of Irish Freedom.

“For many years, he chaired the Irish Republican Solidarity Group in his hometown.

“René regularly visited Ireland, attended Easter Commemorations from Derry to Dublin, stood in picket lines, attended protests and supported the Republican prisoners.”

Friends paid condolences on his Facebook profile, where a picture was posted of him wearing a Derry City FC shirt.
