Kilfennan speed bumps getthe axe after objections

At the beginning of September the Sentinel reported how Roads Service was considering the introduction of traffic calming measures in Newbuildings, the Waterside and Culmore areas. Speed humps were slated for Foyle Crescent, Brunswick Road and Kensington Road as part of the move.

Whilst Chairman of the Foyle Unionist Association, Ronnie McKeegan, quickly welcomed the introduction of speed humps in Foyle Crescent in Newbuildindgs, the Sentinel has learned a similar measure proposed for Brunswick Road is for the axe.

A spokeswoman told the Sentinel: “Roads Service proposed to implement a traffic calming scheme in the Brunswick Road area of the city.

“As part of the legislative consultation process five objections to the introduction of the scheme were received from residents in the area.

“Roads Service do not intend to proceed with the scheme at this time.

“Roads Service remain committed to carry out traffic calming schemes in residential areas when requested in line with current policy.”

Whilst five people have objected to the proposals, one elderly residents who asked not to be named, told the Sentinel he believed the measures are urgently necessary.

“Cars are using the road as a shortcut to get up and down from the Crescent Link and the Waterside,” he said. “Just the other day there was nearly another accident and if something isn’t done about it, someone’s going to be killed.”

The proposals, which have been scrapped for the time being, were for five pairs of cushion type humps, approximately 3.5 metres long, two metres wide and 75 millimetres high.
