Magee block to create hundreds of jobs

A new planning concept statement produced for a proposed £11m teaching block at Magee says the project will generate hundreds of construction jobs and ultimately help secure existing jobs at the campus.

The new development will see an extension built to the south of the existing library at Magee. There will be two tiered lecture theatres on the ground floor; 21 teaching rooms; student hub areas; a meeting room; a small ancillary cafe; and a sunken landscaped garden for students, staff and visitors.

The planning document, which has just been submitted to the local planning office along with an application to build, was produced by Samuel Stevenson and Sons Chartered Architects and Braniff Associates.

It claims: “Aimed at enhancing the student learning experience this proposed development amounts to an investment of £llm in the educational resource base in Derry/Londonderry. Not only will it help to secure existing jobs on the campus but the 18 month construction project will provide several hundred much needed construction jobs in the northwest. Viewed in this light, it can be acknowledged as a very welcome boost to the local economy.”
