LONDONDERRY Mayor Martin Reilly proved a hit with local council workers on Friday when he splashed out for several boxes of ice creams and ice pops.

The recently-installed SDLP man paid for the treats out of his own pocket.

On Friday, staff at the Council offices received a circular to say he had left in a few boxes of Polly Pineapple and Pear Porkies for staff to share.

A spokesperson for the Mayor confirmed that he purchased several boxes of ice creams and ice pops as a goodwill gesture to Council staff on Friday afternoon last. The purchase was not made from public funds.

Unfortunately, the timing could have been better. Once the ice creams were consumed the thunder and lightning started. A typical Londonderry summer. The Atlantic charts suggest we’re in for spell of further rain.
