Meeting to discuss‘drastic’ move for Protestant schools

The Tyrone-Derry and Donegal Action (TDDA) group will host the information evening in Kerrykeel Presbyterian Church Hall from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

The meeting, which will be addressed by the ‘Save Our College, Keep Our Schools’ campaign will be used - the organisers say - to “discuss government proposals that will drastically reduce the number of Protestant Schools, with the possible closure of the teaching college.”

Members of the border community are concerned at plans by the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn, to reduce the ratio of teachers to pupil at small schools, which they believe will disproportionately affect small Protestant schools in Donegal.

They are also concerned at the proposed integration of the Church of Ireland College of Education into a new educational institute.

Meetings have already taken place at Newtowncunningham, Culdaff and Rossnowlagh.

Tonight’s meeting is “open to parents, grand-parents and the wider community and anyone that has an interest in learning more about these proposals and the impact that they will have on our children locally in County Donegal and at a national level.”
