NI could put 2.3k in jail

NORTHERN Ireland could physically incarcerate over 2k people in Magilligan, Maghaberry and Hydebank but never will because it needs to separate prisoners and avoid cell sharing.

Jails Minister David Ford said the total current jail capacity is 2,391.

He stated: “There are a total of 2391 bed spaces currently available, but this level of occupancy is constrained by the need to keep various categories of prisoners in separate accommodation, and the desirability of avoiding cell sharing where possible.”
