NW advert suppressed due to differences over content

A PROMOTIONAL film which was to be the centre piece of a presentation aimed at attracting inward investment to the North West from London and which cost £3,000 to produce was not shown to the potential investors because some of the content “was not deemed suitable for the audience.”

The joint venture between Derry City Council, Coleraine Borough Council, Invest NI and Ilex took place in February and was designed to celebrate 400 years since the City of London forged economic, cultural and trade links in the North West. The event was attended by representatives of London Corporation and the Honourable the Irish Society.

The Mayors and Chief Executives of both authorities attended as well as representatives from both chambers of commerce and representatives of the University of Ulster, Digital Derry, Ilex and London-Derry connections.

A Derry City Council spokesperson said: “The delegation promoted the city and region and its offering as a good place to trade by highlighting our world class connectivity as well as a highly skilled workforce. The visit was a worthwhile exercise allowing those attending to network and make new contacts and promote the city and region to ensure a lasting impact and legacy.”

It was agreed in January that a promotional DVD would be commissioned by Coleraine Borough Council and the cost split between them, Derry City Council and Invest NI. A Coleraine Council spokesperson said: “It was agreed by the group that as the main 1 hour and 30 minutes of the seminar was focusing on the business case for investment in the North West that a 3 to 5 minute promotional DVD primarily aimed at the quality of life would be useful to ‘set the scene’.”

However, it has been confirmed that the DVD was never shown to the potential investors.
