NW UUP backs Kennedy parking rates

The UUP in Londonderry have welcomed the announcement by Roads Minister Danny Kennedy that a scheme which brought lower parking rates for 25 towns in Northern Ireland over the Christmas period will now be rolled out as a non-seasonal pilot.

Over Christmas 2013/14 the scheme saw over £12k put back into the pockets of Londonderry shoppers compared to the same period in 2012/13. The car parks this applies to in Londonderry are Bishop Street, Carlisle Street, Foyle Street, Queen’s Quay, Society Street, Spencer Road, Strand Road, Victoria Market and William Street.

Ronnie Mckeegan Chairman Foyle UUP said it’s “fantastic news that town centres are getting this boost, great news for local businesses and great news for the public,”

The five hours parking for a £1 scheme starts on April 12, 2014 and is expected to last for up to six months.

Alderman Mary Hamilton said “she hoped this scheme would regenerate the City Centre and hopefully bring some much needed business.”

Local Party candidate Julia Kee said the latest initiative from Danny Kennedy is designed to both “save the public money and attract more people into town centres.”
