Ombudsman to probe video showing PSNI officers leaving young woman in a bus bay

Dr Michael Maguire, Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, is to investigate the PSNI handling of an incident in Londonderry, which appears to show two police officers lifting a young woman onto a bus bay in the city centre and leaving her there.

Dr Maguire viewed the video footage which appears to show what happens after two police officers discover a young woman lying on John Street in Londonderry.

Dr Maguire has now initiated an independent investigation into the police handling of the incident.

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton commented that on “first view” the behaviour was “well below the standards we expect from our officers in dealing with vulnerable people whether the vulnerability is due to alcohol or anything else.”

“This is a bad day for confidence in policing,” said Mr Hamilton.
