Performers sought for epic Colmcille pageant

ACTORS, dancers and performers of all shapes, sizes and varieties are being sought for an epic pageant to mark the feast of Londonderry’s founding father, Colmcille.
Colmcille was put out of Derry after a copyright dispute with St Finnian led to a bloody battle at Cúl Dreimhne. He sailed to Scotland having founded a settlement on the site of modern Londonderry. Open days for people wishing to take part in The Return of Colmcille, which is penned by Frank Cottrell Boyce - a screenwriter who wrote ‘Welcome to Sarajevo’ and ‘24 Hour Party People’ as well as episodes of Coronation Street - are taking place in the ‘Tech’ on April 13 and 14.

Local people are being called upon to play their part in the story ofLondonderry in the biggest outdoor spectacle to be delivered by Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013.

Involving a cast of hundreds, The Return of Colmcille will take place over the weekend of June 7 and 8. If you can act or dance or simply want to get involved in something amazing, we would urge you to come to one of the Performers Open Days that will take place at the North West Regional College, Strand Road on Saturday, April 13, or Sunday, April 14.

Wendy Blemings, participation coordinator said: “Everyone has a performer inside them and we want people from across the region to get involved to help tell this story that is unique to the people of Derry~Londonderry.

“Young or old, this is a chance to dust off those dance shoes and be part of something big.”

The Performers Open Days will offer you the opportunity sign up as a participant, learn more about the events and be involved in workshops with the Artistic Directors and the Choreographers.

Through these fun workshops, facilitators will decide how best to put your skills into practice.

The Return of Colmcille is being produced by internationally renowned arts organisation Walk The Plank whose credits include the Liverpool 08 European Capital of Culture Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and the Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture Opening Ceremony.
