The bomb squad was tasked to a security alert at the PPS office on Monday morning. The PSNI confirmed that the package was a viable letter bomb type device similar in make up to two devices discovered on Friday (October 25). This was reference to the interception of letter bombs targeting Chief Constable Matt Baggott and prominent Londonderry officer Jon Burrows.

Foyle Chambers was evacuated on Monday. Army Technical Officers (ATO) examined the package discovered in the property and it was removed for further examination.

Police asked members of the public to remain vigilant when opening their mail and anyone who notices anything suspicious should contact the police immediately.

Alderman Middleton said: “This is the third incident in recent days and worryingly it seems someone has discovered the formula for making these kinds of devices.

“Fortunately, this hasn’t resulted in loss of life or injury but it has caused considerable disruption with the office having to be completely evacuated.

“It’s also caused a lot of worry in the immediate area and is something to be utterly condemned.”
