The bomb squad confirmed a viable pipe bomb device prompted the evacuation of several homes in Creggan on Thursday (June 12).

Police in Londonderry are appealing for information following the security alert in the Eastway area.

A report of a suspicious object was received shortly after 9am on Thursday.

The road was eventually re-opened late on Thursday afternoon.

Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) first had to be tasked to the alert. The road had to be closed and a number of residents had to be evacuated from their homes.

Following a controlled explosion the suspect device was declared a viable pipe bomb type device. It was taken away on Thursday afternoon for further examination.

Police in Londonderry are appealing to anyone with any information to contact them at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101.
