Mr Kennedy stated: “I am pleased to advise the Member that I have recently received the Inspector’s Report on the proposed A6 Londonderry to Dungiven dualling scheme.”

He added: “I intend to publish a statement on the way forward in due course after issues arising from the report have been fully examined and resolved.”

He said the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland 2011-2021 includes a number of high priority schemes - including the A6 - as part of a £390 million package funded through alternative finance in the period 2015/16 to 2020/21.

He had already hinted private money would be used to build the Londonderry to Dungiven dual carriageway but whether this will involve tolling once the road is complete or private finance initiative loans up front is unclear.

Now he has stated: “However, a commitment to fund the revenue consequences of this roads package will be required, therefore, the timing will depend upon future resource budget settlements.

“In the event of alternative finance not being available, the scheme could be included, together with other priority schemes, in the bidding process for conventional funds, in the next Budget period.”
