Rugby club can wipe out debt with the help of Fleadh revenues

INDEBTED City of Derry Rugby Club can wipe its balance clean after being given the job of running three camping sites during the Fleadh in August.

Moss Dineen has written to members asking them to volunteer saying it presents a tremendous opportunity for the Judges Road club.

Though a stalwart of the Londonderry rugby scene for decades, Moss, originally hails from the traditional music heartland of Kerry, so it’s perhaps fitting it was he who informed colleagues of the lifeline the Fleadh has afforded.

“City of Derry RFC have been given a fantastic opportunity to help clear its debt by cashing in on the Fleadh coming to the City this August,” he wrote. “The Rugby Club has been offered total control of running the Prehen Campsite with professional security supplied from Wednesday 14th to Monday 19th August 2013. The profit after expenses along with revenue from food outlets onsite will go to CDRFC.

“We are also going to run a Caravan Site at the Rugby Club, Judges Road which will have to be covered from Sunday 11th to Monday 19th August 2013. This will be used by some of our regular caravan visitors and Ceoltas families participating in Music Schools all week and Competitions later in the week. We have already had bookings for the week. The occupants will use all our facilities including the Bar and Food outlets’ supplied by CDRFC. The profit with very little overheads will go to the Rugby Club.

“We have also been offered the running of the Caravan Site at Fort George which will be easily managed but we are waiting final confirmation from the Fleadh Committee that it is going to be a designated site,” he told members.

Although professional security will be provided volunteers are essential. They will be provided with full training by Derry City Council. Moss urged people to come forward.

“City of Derry Rugby Club can only succeed in maximising on this chance to virtually wipe out our debt if we can get a commitment from all Club Members; Playing and Non Playing, to give of their time over that week in August. We will need members to steward these sites on an 8hr shift 24/7 basis. City of Derry RFC needs this financial input to continue in our commitment through rugby to develop into a community based organisation meeting the needs of all.”
