Snow Patrol give £20k tocancer unit

CHART-TOPPING pop group Snow Patrol have donated £20,000 to the Altnagelvin cancer ward.

Band members Gary Lightbody, Jonathan Quinn, Nathan Connolly, Tom Simpson, Paul Wilson and Johnny McDaid - who hails from Londonderry - said the donation followed two sold out dates for their acoustic Christmas show held at the Waterfront Hall.

Frontman Gary Lightbody explained to fans at the intimate hometown gig that all money raised from both gigs will be donated to Children’s charities and hospital wards.

Not only did the band agree to donate all money but to double it! A total of £30,000 was generated through ticket sales and another £30,000 was matched by the band to be donated.

Caroline Oates, Western Trust Chemotherapy Unit Manager; Liz England, Cancer Service Manager and Macmillian Lead Nurse; Michelle Doherty, Lung Nurse Specialist and Helen Nutt, Chemotherapy Unit Sister from Altnagelvin Hospital received a special invite from the band for the gig which they described as - “absolutely fantastic!”

Caroline Oates, Western Trust Chemotherapy Unit Manager said: “Being such a big fan of the band I was astounded when I received the call from Snow Patrol’s Management Team.

“Their generosity has been totally overwhelming and I would personally like to thank them as their donation will make a huge impact in providing comforts for patients undergoing treatment in the Chemotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.”
