Translink is reminding people from Londonderry to rethink their travel choices, following the announcement that its fares will be frozen throughout 2014.

Passengers travelling daily to Belfast with Goldline can save up to £365.60 on petrol or £300.36 on diesel per month compared to private car travel.

According to research by the Resolution Foundation that Northern Ireland has witnessed a deeper recession than its UK counterparts, coupled with recent reports indicating that the general cost of living is increasing, passengers in Derry~Londonderry can take solace in the fact that Goldline offers great value for money.

Alan Young, Translink Service Delivery Manager Derry~Londonderry said, “As fuel, food, energy, car parking and car maintenance costs continue to rise we are confident that passenger transport represents the best value travel option.

“This is the second time we have frozen our fares in recent years and this is down to good business management and increasing numbers of passengers on board our services. Our customers regularly tell us that they prefer using passenger transport as it gives them more time to relax, free from the stress of driving in traffic and more time to catch up on social media or emails using free Wi-Fi on board coaches.

Scott Kennerley Consumer Council Head of Policy (Transport) said, “According to recent Consumer Council research the cost of petrol and diesel rank third following energy and food in the top three concerns for consumers in terms of living costs. Public transport can provide savings and we encourage consumers to shop around for the best form of transport for their needs. Consumers should factor in all transport related costs when planning their journeys including parking and fuel costs when deciding whether to drive or travel by public transport.”

Translink’s ‘Goldline Fuel Saver’ lists details of daily, weekly and monthly savings available through travelling on Goldline services rather than travelling by private car and incurring higher fuel costs. The price of petrol and diesel is based on the cheapest local petrol or diesel price according to the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland’s Fuel Watch.

Translink has also launched its ‘Frozen Moments’ competition which seeks to encourage passengers and the general public alike to capture and submit a special moment through a photograph or ‘selfie’ that they would like to freeze in time.
