He said news the £22m upgrade has been delayed for a further year due to problems with procurement issues, is a devastating blow for the city and region.

“This is extremely disappointing news for the city and the entire North West region. It is pivotal that Translink clarify the reasons for the delay and why these problems were not foreseen and adequate measures put in place to ensure delivery of this important infrastructural investment.

“As we come to the end of our 2013 UK City of Culture year, it is hugely frustrating that infrastructural development and investment in transport for the North West has been put off for a year.

“It is vital that we get a proper intercity service between Derry and Belfast and to allow more tourists to get here quicker and for citizens and businesses to enjoy easier and more frequent journeys.”
