Views sought on new transport strategy

THE Regional Development Minister, Danny Kennedy, is inviting the Londonderry public to have their say on the revised Regional Transportation Strategy.

A series of meetings are to be held across Northern Ireland to facilitate feedback on the subject. To ensure there is a wide range of opinions from all areas the public meetings will be held in Ballymena, Londonderry, Newry, Belfast and Omagh, and are scheduled to take place in late May and early June.

The revised RTS proposes a series of strategic objectives designed to achieve the transportation vision for Northern Ireland.

Issuing the invitation the Minister said: “At the core of the review of the RTS is a move towards greater sustainability, which will contribute towards growing the economy, improving the quality of life for all, reducing the impact of transport on the environment and transforming our society.”

Mr Kennedy added: “The increase in population and vehicles has placed significant pressures on our transportation networks coupled with fiscal constraints and the need to reduce our environmental impacts. The revised Strategy outlines where the current RTS has taken us, where we believe we need to get to in the future and how we intend to get there. It concentrates on moving people rather than vehicles, creating space for people and freight and using our transportation networks in a smarter way.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to attend these public meetings, find out more about the Regional Transportation Strategy and influence the transportation future of Northern Ireland.”
