Watch: Global rainbow illuminates city to the sounds of Little Bear and Westlife star

Five thousand people attending a free concert headlined by former Westlife frontman Shane Filan on Friday were gobsmacked by a spectacular Global Rainbow lighting up the skies.

The crowds enjoyed outstanding performances from the Clameens, Music Promise Junior Choir, soloist Erica Curran, Little Bear and Shane Filan.

Mayor Martin Reilly said: “The city has hundreds of events during 2014 which will allow us to showcase our musical talent and reaffirm the city as a location for large scale events.

“We are building on the work that has been done in advance of and during 2013 to showcase the city as a destination to host major events such as the Pan Celtic Festival, the Clipper Round the World Race, the Walled City Marathon and the Walled City Tattoo.

“We are delighted that these events will also include Music City Day, Other Voices and the Beach Boys, and as we progress through 2014 there will be further announcements.”

The Mayor added the new addition of free Friday evening live music performances in local cafes, restaurants, hotels and retail outlets between 5 and 9pm was a welcome addition to the city’s offering.

Oonagh McGillion, Legacy Director with Derry City Council said: “The people of our amazing city have embraced 2013 and tonight they have demonstrated once again their enthusiasm to support cultural events in such large numbers.

“The Global Rainbow illustrates our commitment to a sustained legacy from 2013 to deliver an exciting range of music events in 2014.

“This moving piece of art, which will be visible from various locations across the city, will have a huge visual impact and encourage people to move around the city and view it from different vantage points.

“It will get them talking about the year ahead and help create a buzz and aspiration of hope for the future.”
