Watch: Kennedy backs Durkan’s vow to remove election tat from Giro route

Roads Minister Danny Kennedy says he’s fully supportive of Londonderry Environment Minister Mark H. Durkan’s vow to remove election posters from the Giro d’Italia route in May.

The PSNI says it’s well prepared for the massive event.

And the Tourist Board says tens of thousands of foreign visitors are likely to land here for one of international cycling’s three prestige tours.

The world’s media will also attend three stages of the race in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland over May 9 to 11.

Election posters will be banned from the route of the race - which will include parts of Belfast, Co Antrim, and Co Armagh - in a bid to improve the presentation of the race route.

Despite the difficulties involved in planning the sporting event, it has been hailed as being a massive boon to Northern Ireland, bigger still than last year’s World Police and Fire Games.

Along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, the Giro is part of international cycling’s triumvirate of flagship tours.

Only one person from this island has ever won the race. Stephen Roche won the Giro in 1987 before going on to win the Tour de France and the World road race championship in the same year.

Stephen’s son Nicholas, and his nephew, Dan Martin will race in Northern Ireland next month. Philip Deignan is recovering from injury but also hopes to be selected.
